Purpose: The aim of this study is to observe effects of 4 mg/0.1 ml intravitreal and 20 mg/0.5 ml subtenon triamcinolone acetonide treatment, used for inflammation caused by posterior and intermediate uveitis for reasons other than Behcet, to intraocular pressure (IOP) and lens.
Materials and Methods: The records for 44 eyes of 44 patients being treated for posterior and intermediate uveitis were complete on this retrospective study. 20 patients were treated with intravitreal (IVTA) and 24 patients treated with subtenon triamcinolone (PSTA). Clinic follow-up observations were made on 3 control periods; first control was 1 month, second control period was 3 month, third control period was 6 months after injection. During control examinations, intraocular pressures were measured with applanation tonometer and complications for increased lens densities were recorded.
Results: Mean intraocular pressure levels for intravitreal and posterior subtenon patients were measured as 14.33±1.90 and 14.24±1.17 respectively first day after injection, 24.29±4.68 and 17.48±2.40 at the end of first month after injection, 15.14±2.33 and 15.71±1.97 at the end of third month after injection and 15.14±2.33 and 15.10±1.26 at the end of sixth month after injection. When the results were compared at the end of first month, significant difference between the groups was observed (p<0.05). IOP was clearly increased on PSTA group. However IOP increase on following examinations were not significantly different (p>0.05). Cataract progression or existing opacity increase after IVTA and PSTA injections were observed as 6 (30%) on IVTA group and 1 (13.6%) on PSTA group and the difference was significant (p<0.05).
Although intraocular pressure at the end of first month was higher on IVTA group, no difference was observed on later examinations.
