Purpose: To compare various anterior segment parameters in patients with clinically unilateral pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma

Materials and methods: Fifty patients who had been diagnosed with unilateral pseudoexfoliation were evaluated at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Twenty-eight of them were classifi ed as pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PS) and 22 as pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PG). All the patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations including spherical equivalent diopter (SED), visual acuity (VA), central corneal thickness (CCT), corneal endothelial cell density (CECD), axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volüme (ACV) and aqueous fl are values were recorded.

Results: The mean age was 68.8±6.5 in PS patients, 66.5±8.9 in PG patients and 65.4±5.1 years in control groups (p=0.087). VA was statistically lower in PS an PG eyes compared to control groups (p<0.001).There were no signifi cant differences in SED, AL, CCT, ACD, ACV and DA between both groups. CECD was statistically lower in eyes with PG compared with control groups (p<0.05). Aqueous fl are values were statistically higher in eyes with PS, fellow eyes of PS, in eyes with PG and fellow eyes of PG compared with control groups (p<0.05).

Conclusions: Since senile cataract is more frequently seen in patients with pseudoexfoliation visual acuity is statistically lower than control groups. Lower corneal endothelial cell density values observed in eyes with PG. This may create a higher risk for corneal endothelial decompensation after glaucoma and cataract surgery in eyes with PG than eyes with PS. Higher values of aqueous fl are in fellow eyes of PG and PS were the earliest signs of the subclinical involvement. Keywords : pseudoexfoliation, corneal endothelial cell density, aqueous fl are
