Purpose: We aimed at comparing IOLMaster 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) and Lenstar 900 (Haag-Streit), fi nding out differences between the measurement results of these biometry devices and determining their capability to successfully measure such conditions as severe cataract.

Material and methods: Fifty-two eyes of 30 subjects diagnosed with cataract were included in the study. The axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), corneal radius (K1,K2), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (WTW) distance and pupil diameter (PD) were measured in all eyes with IOLMaster 700 and Lenstar 900, while the measurement results as well as the capability of the devices to measure those eyes with specifi c aspects such as severe cataract were compared.

Results: 30 people were included in our study, out of whom 16 were female and 14 were male. The mean AL, K, ACD, CCT, WTW and PD values measured by both devices were found to be statistically similar (p>0.05). There was a statistically signifi cant difference of 0.021 mm only between the mean LT values (p=0.04). However, this difference was clinically insignifi cant. Because, the minimum difference of 0.05 mm in the formulations to calculate intraocular lens (IOL) power may lead to differences in IOL power. All values measured by both devices were found to be highly correlated. All eyes could be measured by IOLMaster 700; however, AL and LT each in 4 eyes that had severe nuclear cataract, ACD in 3 eyes, and K1,K2, WTW and PD in 2 eyes could not be measured by Lenstar 900.

Conclusion: We think that we can also make IOL power calculations with IOLMaster 700 in eyes with severe cataract. Keywords : IOLMaster 700, Lenstar 900, Optical biometry
