To Evaluate the Effect of Central Corneal Thickness on Diurnal Variation of Intraocular Pressure

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of central corneal thickness (CCT) on diurnal variation of intraocular pressure (IOP).

Materials and Methods: This retrospective study involved an evaluation of eyes of 52 patients, a total of 104 eyes, who were followed-up and measured their IOP by the same physician between May 2012 and September 2013 in the eye clinic of Hakkari State Hospital. Patients were grouped by their CCT (>520 ?m and ?520 ?m) and diurnal IOP variation (?5 mmHg and <5 mmHg).

Results: Of the 58% of patients (n=30) were male, and 42% (n=22) of them were female. Intraocular pressure (IOP) of the subjects who had CCT ?520 ?m were found significantly lower at all measurements (p<0.01). It was found that mean IOP of the subjects were lower in the afternoon hours than in the morning (p<0.05). Subjects who had CCT >520 ?m had significantly more ?5 mmHg IOP fluctuation (p<0.05) .

Conclusion: IOP fluctuation may cause false results in patients with high CCT. Therefore, patients need to be evaluated carefully in terms of other parameters which cause risk for glaucoma. Keywords : Central corneal thickness, diurnal variation of intraocular pressure
