The Role of Micronutrition in Age-related Cataract and Glaucoma

Free radicals which are occured by oxigen metabolizm damage cellular structure such as lipid, protein and DNA. All cell membranes are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Therefore they are easily damaged by oxidation. Antioxidants fight harmful affects of oxygen, control the free radicals, work on a fine balance between the formation and elimination of reactive oxigen spieces (ROS). When this balance fails, oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is a cellular damage caused by ROS. It is responsible for pathogenesis of many diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, age-related cataract and glaucoma. In this review, the role of antioxidants in the development of age-related cataract and glaucoma is discussed by scanning literature.
