Purpose: To evaluate the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) in rabbits while under general anesthesia before and after insertion of laryngeal mask airway (LMA), Cobra perilaryngeal airway (Cobra PLA), and V-gel laryngeal mask airway.

Materials and Methods: Eighteen New Zealand rabbits weighing between 2.0-3.50 kg were randomized into three groups of LMA, Cobra PLA, and V-gel according to body weight. After anesthesia induction with intramuscularly 35 mg/kg ketamine and 5 mg/kg xylazine, intravenous 1 mg/kg rocuronium was used for neuromuscular blockage. IOP were measured just before insertion of airway devices and at 1., 3., 5., 10. min after insertion of airway devices by Tonopen®. Friedman test were used to determine the statistically significance between the measurements in all groups. A p value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.

Results: Before the insertion of airway devices the mean IOPs in LMA, Cobra PLA, and V-Gel groups were 8.17±2.64, 8.17±4.45, 9.00±1.67 mmHg, respectively. The mean IOPs at 1.min after insertion of airways were measured 6.00±0.63, 7.50±1.38, 6.83±1.17 mmHg, respectively. The changes of IOPs with the insertion of airways in all groups did not reach statistically significance (p>0.05).

Conclusion: LMA, Cobra PLA, and V-Gel were found as easy and fast applicable airway devices in rabbits anesthesia. Insertions of these supraglottic airway devices are not associated with an increased IOP response in rabbits. Our result needs to be supported with future studies in human.
