Systemic Acyclovir Therapy Dependent Recurrent Herpetic Stromal Keratitis

Herpes simplex virus keratitis is a disease which is related to vision loss secondary to infection. Virus infection is settled on sensory ganglions and causes recurrent infections. Oral and topical administration of acyclovir as an antiviral agent may give positive results. Periods of active relapsing of the disease have directed the physicians outside the prophylactic treatment applications. Therefore, low-dose oral acyclovir maintenance therapy provides positive outcomes results. In this study, a thirty years old male patient who is characterized with recurrent herpetic keratitis is reported. The patient's pattern of attack frequency and corneal dendritic propagation taken into consideration of a maintance dose of 800 mg daily oral acyclovir. In a follow-up period of 9 years, we have observed a significant reduction in the exabercations of keratitis and potential visual loss was avoided by the use of prophylactic acyclovir therapy.
