³S.B. Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To investigate the effect of intraoperative injection of viscoelastic (sodium hyaluronate) under the scleral flap in preventing early postoperative complications of trabeculectomy.
Materials and Methods: In this prospective randomized study, 59 eyes in which trabeculectomy had been performed were divided into a study group (29 eyes) and a control group (30 eyes). In the study group sodium hyaluronate (1.0%) was injected under the scleral flap, while in the control group only balanced salt solution was injected.
Results: On the postoperative first day, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of mean visual acuity, anterior chamber shallowing, or hyphema. Early hypotony was significantly more frequent in the control group (33.3%) than in the study group (10.3%). Postoperative choroidal detachment and an early intraocular pressure peak occurred in one patient in the control group.
Conclusion: Injecting sodium hyaluronate under the scleral flap during trabeculectomy significantly reduced the incidence of early hypotony. Keywords : Complication, early hypotony, glaucoma, trabeculectomy, viscoelastic
