Results of Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implantation in Eyes with Silicone Oil

Purpose: To evaluate our clinical results of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in eyes treated with silicone oil tamponade.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-four vitrectomized and 1000 cs silicone oil filled eyes 9 with proliferative vitreoretinopathy-regmatogenous retina detachment, 11 with proliferative diabetic retinopathy-tractional retina detachment and 4 with giant retinal tear) that had underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantatiton at Süleyman Demirel University Medical School, Department of Ophthalmology between 2002 and 2005 were included in the study. In all cases there were lens opacities which prevent the visiualization of retinas. Phacoemulsification was performed using ’Stop and chop’’ or ‘’divide and conquer’’ techniques. Foldable acrylic lenses were used in all operations. The patients were evaluated accor¬ding to postoperative follow-up period, duration between the phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy, intraoperative complications, preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuities.
Results: Twenty-four patients (M/F: 15 / 9) with a mean age of 57.2±5.4 year (range: 48-68 year) were included in this study. The mean time interval between the phacoemulsification and silicone oil implantation was 6.4±2.8 months (range: 2-14 months). The mean postoperative follow up was 5.7±3.4 month (range: 3-12 month). Preoperative; the mean best corrected visual acuity was 1.47±0.19 (range: 1.0-1.7) LogMar. Postoperative,1.06±0.45 (range: 0.3-1.7) LogMar (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, p:0.001).
Conclusion: In vitrectomized and silicone filled eyes phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation may increase the visual acuity but the visual prognosis is determined by retinal and especially macular status.
