Laser Suture Lysis After Trabeculectomy

Materials and Methods: We evaluated retrospectively 18 eyes of 18 patients who had laser suture lysis (500-1000 mW, 0,05 sec, 50 μ) among 285 eyes of 230 patients who had trabeculectomy between April 1993 and April 2004 and who was followed for at least 1 year in the glaucoma department of our clinic.
Results: Nine of the patients were male and nine of them were female, and the mean age was 68.5±9.1. Mean interval between trabeculectomy and suture lysis was 24.9±20.7 days (1 week-2.75 months). Mean intraocular pressure (IOP) before laser suture lysis was 20.2±5.4 mmHg, and the mean IOP measured just after suture lysis was 8.1±4.3. The difference between the two measurement was statistically significant (p<0.001) and a mean drop of 12.7±5.5 mmHg (60%) was obtained. Patients were followed for 20.4±5.5 months (12-30 months). Mean IOP at the last visit was 12.88± 2.74 mmHg. 7.2±6.7 mmHg (29%) drop in IOP at the last visit compared to the mean IOP before laser suture lysis was also statistically significant (p<0.001). Two of the eyes had hypotony and choroidal detachment after suture lysis, no other complication was observed.
Conclusion: Laser suture lysis is a safe and effective method in the management of the patients in whom the target IOP was not reached after trabeculectomy.
