Comparison of the Effects of Subtenon and Subconjunctival Anaesthesia on Pain Score in Uncomplicated Phacoemulsification Surgery
Tamer ERYİĞİT1, Üzeyir Tolga ŞAHANDAR1
M.D. Isparta State Hospital, Eye Clinic, Isparta/TURKEY Purpose: To compare the effects of subtenon and subconjunctival anaesthesia on pain score in uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery.

Materials and Methods: A total of 100 eyes of 100 patients who underwent phacoemulsification without complication between February 2013 and September 2014 in our clinic were included in the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups randomly.1 ml lidocaine 2% subtenon was injected in the first group (Group I) and 1 ml lidocaine 2% subconjunctival was injected in the second group (Group II). Akinesia, pain and anaesthesia block efficiency was evaluated with visual analagous pain scale with 10 points in both groups. SPSS-16 as statistical software and test of paired t-test as a method were used. Values that p<0.05 were accepted significant.

Results: There was no significant difference between both groups in terms of mean age and gender (p>0.05). Average duration of the surgery was 12.02±1.95 minutes in the group I and 12.18±1.88 minutes in the group II. Pain scores were evaluated immediately after use of anaesthesia, during the surgery and 1 hour after surgery. Mean values were 1.76±0.80, 1.42±0.54, 1.72±0.61 in Group I; and 1.90±0.84, 1.54±0.61, 1.86±0.73 in Group II, respectively. Difference between them was not statistically significant (p>0.05). There is no significant difference between both groups in terms of akinesia (p>0.05).

Conclusions: We think that there is no significant difference between subtenon and subconjunctival anaesthesia in terms of pain score and akinesia in uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery. Keywords : Subtenon, subconjunctival, anaesthesia, phacoemulsification
