Objective: To investigate the efficacy and reliability of intracameral cefuroxime or intracameral moxifloxacin usage after phacoemulsification (PE) and intra ocular lens (IOL) implantation for the prophylaxis of endophthalmitis in early period.

Material and Method: 108 eyes of 108 patients receiving intracameral moxifloxacin (Group I) and 96 eyes of 96 patients receiving intracameral cefuroxime (Group II) after uncomplicated PE-IOL implantation for prophylaxis of endophthalmitis were included in this retrospective study. Patients were evaluated in terms of the corrected visual acuity (CVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), inflammatory reaction and endophthalmitis. Preoperatively performed examinations were repeated after 1 day, 1 week and 1 month following the operation.

Results: There was no difference between groups for age and gender (p>0.05). There was no difference between two groups, preoperative CVA and postoperative CVA in first month (p>0.05). There was no difference in terms of improvement of CVA (P>0.05). Also there were not differences between groups in terms of preoperative and postoperative IOP in all controls (p>0.05). Anterior segment reaction was observed in 2 eyes (%2.08) from Group II whereas it was observed in 4 eyes (%3.7) from Group I. There was no difference between groups in terms of anterior segment reaction development (p>0.05). Considering total 204 eyes in two groups anterior segment reaction following PE-IOL implantation was observed in 6 eyes (% 2.94). Endophthalmitis was not observed in both groups in postoperative controls.

Discussion: The use of intracameral moxifloxacin or intracameral cefuroxime was determined as efficient and reliable in endophthalmitis prophylaxis after PE-IOL implantation in early period. Keywords : Endophthalmitis, phacoemulsification, moxifloxacin, cefuroxime
