Rational Drug Use in Glaucoma: Side Effects and Toxicity
Ufuk ELGİN
Ulucanlar Eye Training and Research Hospital, Ankara/TURKEY High intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most important risk factor for glaucoma which is a progressive multifactorial optic neuropathy. To achieve the aim of reaching target IOP by decreasing IOP with medical and surgical anti-glaucoma therapy is the golden standard for the treatment of glaucoma. For reaching the target IOP, the compliance to treatment is very important in addition to the efficacy of anti-glaucoma medications. Probably the most important factor for compliance to treatment is the side effects of the drops. Anti-glaucoma medications have many systemic and ocular side effects. Ocular side effects are more frequent and are mostly ocular surface disorders caused by the preservation material. The aim of this review is to summarize the systemic and ocular side effects of preservative material and active ingredient of the agents in medical anti-glaucoma treatment and to inform the readers about the prophylaxis and the treatment of these side effects. Keywords : Glaucoma, intraocular pressure, side effect, preservative material, active ingredient, ocular surface
