Phacoemulsification in Patients with Fuchs’ Uveitis Syndrome

Purpose: To evaluate peri- and postoperative complications and visual outcomes of cataract surgery with phacoemulsification technique and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in cases diagnosed as Fuchs' uveitis syndrome (FUS).

Materials and Methods: Twentyone eyes of 21 FUS cases who underwent phacoemulsification surgery and IOL implantation were evaluated retrospectively. Cases were evaluated in terms of intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, intraocular inflammation, posterior capsule opasification and other complications.

Results: The mean age of 13 (61.9%) male and 8 (38.1%) female patients was 37.9 (28-75) years. Postoperative mean follow-up time was 245±10.3 (110-380) days. While preoperative visual acuity ranged between 0.30-1.30 (LogMAR), postoperative acuity ranged between 0.00-0.10 (LogMAR) at the last follow-up visit. Peroperatively, bleeding from peripheral iris (Amsler's sign) was observed in 12 (57.1%) of cases. Mild anterior chamber reaction in 2 cases (9.5%), transient increase in IOP controlled by topical medical therapy in 4 cases (19%) and cystoid macular edema in 1 case (4.7%) were detected postoperatively. Two eyes (9.5%) developed posterior capsule opasification and underwent Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy during follow-up.

Conclusion: Phacoemulsification technique with IOL implantation is safe and effective method in patients with cataract secondary to FUS. Postoperatively visual outcomes are quite curative. Keywords : Fuchs, uveitis, cataract, phacoemulsification
