Purpose: To determine the changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) and central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients under hemodialysis (HD) therapy.

Materials and Methods: Forty eyes of 40 patients with chronic renal failure under routine HD therapy were included in the study. IOP and CCT were measured 30 minutes before HD. After systolic and diastolic blood pressures were taken, blood samples were taken for plasma osmolality, and blood urea nitrogen determination. These procedures were repeated 30 minutes after HD therapy.

Results: Subjects mean age was 57.2±17.4 (22-87) years. Before HD, mean IOP was 12.7±3.3 mmHg, CCT was 521.6±18.3 μm, Posm was 339.1±19.1 mos/kg and BUN concentration was 146±39.2 mg/dl. Systolic and diastolik blood pressures were 135.3±23.8 mmHg and 81.4±11.8 mmHg respectively. After HD, mean IOP was 12.0±3.3 mmHg; CCT was 522.7±17.4 μm; Posm was 312.5±8.6 mos/kg and BUN concentration was 61.2±19.7 mg/dl. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were 110.6±18.4 mmHg and 69.6±8.8 mmHg after HD. There was no statistical significant change on IOP and CCT after HD (p>0,05). IOP and CCT change were not correlated with Posm, BUN concentration and systemic blood pressure changes.

Conclusion: Changes that HD treatment caused on plasma does not effect IOP and CCT. Keywords : Hemodialysis, inraocular pressure, central corneal thickness
