Purpose: To assess the anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), vitreous length (VL) and axial length (AL) in an adult population, and to investigate the relationship between these biometric parameters.

Material and Method: 186 eyes of 186 patients (99 male, 87 female) were included to the study. Biometry was performed by A-scan ultrasound (SW-1000, Suowei Co., Tianjin, China) after cycloplegia. Patients with AL difference higher than 0.2 mm between eyes were excluded. The mean value of 8 biometric measurements was used for statistical analysis.

Results: The mean age was 53.48±12.60 years (range, 35-79), the mean ACD was 3.04±0.38 (range, 2.11-3.99) mm, the mean LT was 4.53±0.41 (range, 3.53-5.84) mm, the mean VL was 15.56±2.13 (range, 12.11-26.23) mm, the mean AL was 23.14±2.15 (range, 18.92-33.3) mm. The mean values of ACD, LT, VL and AL were higher in males than females (0.04, 0.01, 0.76, and 0.78 mm respectively), though the differences were not statistically significant (for all, p>0.05). There was a very strong positive correlation between VL and AL (r=0.965, p<0.0001), a strong positive correlation between ACD and AL (r=0.227, p=0.002) and a statistically significant negative correlation between LT and VL (r=-0.163, p=0.026). There was no correlation between ACD and LT, ACD and VL, and LT and AL (for all, p>0.05).

Conclusion: Anterior chamber depth, LT, VL and AL measurements show some variations according to race and geographical area. These biometric parameters are higher in males than females. Keywords : Axial length, lens thickness, anterior chamber depth, vitreous length
