Traumatic Cataract due to Corneal Bee Sting

Cataract related to a corneal bee sting is an uncommon environmental eye injury that can result in various complications due to the penetrating, immunologic and toxic effects of the stinger and its injected venom. A 52-year-old woman presented at our clinic complaining of a bee sting in her right eye that had occurred a few years earlier and progressively decreasing vision. Upon examination, her best-corrected visual acuity was 0.05 in the right eye and 1.0 in the left eye. There was a paracentral corneal opacity, capsular opacification and pigmentation, and localized lens opacification in her right eye. We performed uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery with foldable intra-ocular lens implantation to the right eye. Her postoperative best-corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 0.4 during follow-up. Keywords : Bee sting; cataract; corneal injury
