Results And Complications of Phacoemulsification in Monocular Patients

Purpose: To evaluate the results and complications of phacoemulsification in monocular patients.

Materials and Methods: 29 eyes of 29 patients treated with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation were evaluated retrospectively between June 2007-March 2010. Patients' demographic characteristics, reasons for being monocular eyes, and associated pathologies, additional surgeries, preoperative and postoperative visual acuities and complications were evaluated.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 74.9±10.5 (39-90) years. The mean follow-up period was 10.7±3.8 months. The mean preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was found as 1.06±0.38 LogMAR and 0.37±0.45 LogMAR respectively. (p<0.05). The mean preoperative and postoperative IOP was 15.0±3.5 mmHg and 13.5±2.9 mmHg respectively (p<0.05). Opening the posterior capsule and vitreous loss in 1 patient, zonular dialysis in 1 patient, intraocular lens haptic breakage occurred during the placement in 1 patient were seen as complication. During the follow-up period: posterior capsule opacification (2 patients) , cystoid macular edema (1 patient) were developed.

Conclusion: Phacoemulsification for the cataract surgery in monocular patients is a high risk procedure, however the results were satisfactory. Keywords : Monocular cataract, phacoemulsification
