Does Cross-Linking Therapy Effect the Values of Intraocular Pressure?
Zerrin TUNCER1, Seçkin ERDEM1
M.D., Bayrampaşa Eye Hospital, İstanbul, Uzm. Dr. Purpose: To investigate the change in intraocular pressure values of cross-linking (CXL) patients due to keratoconus.
Material and Methods: We evaluated prospectively the keratoconus patients to whom we planned CXL therapy. Best corrected visual acquity (BCVA), flat and steep axis of the cornea, corneal topography (Oculus Pentecam), central corneal thickness (CCT), biomicroscopy, Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and Pascal Dynamic Contour Tonometry (PDCT) of the both eyes were evaluated. CXL therapy is applied for the one eye of the patient. Three months after the therapy, GAT, PDCT and CCT reevaluated. The results were analyzed using paired t test.
Results: We evaluated the 28 eyes of six females and 22 males. Before therapy, the mean BCVA was 0.55±0.25, the mean flat keratometric value and the mean steep keratometric value were respectively 7.19±0.4 mm, 6.66±0.44 mm The mean age was 23.26±5.98 (13-35) and the mean CCT was 466.70±38.63 μm. Three months after therapy, the mean CCT was 454.50±47.16 μm and there was no statistically significant difference(p=0.22). The mean intraocular pressure before&after CXL therapy were evaluated. The values before and after with GAT were 10.15±2.57 mmHg and 10.66±2.21 mmHg; with PDKT were 13.71±2.12 mmHg and 14.28±2.52 mmHg respectively and there was no statistically significant difference(p=0.19, p=0.20).
Discussion: The CXL therapy applied widely for stopping the aggravation of keratoconus, does not make any change on intraocular pressure.
