Purpose: Taking into account the known difficulties of surgery in delayed cataracts, it is aimed to demonstrate the reasons for the delay of operation time in mature cataract patients and to determine the measures to be taken to prevent delay.
Materials and Methods: The study involved 87 patients operated on using phacoemulsification in our hospital from January 2011 to December 2011. The patients had stage 4 mature cataracts in whom visual activity was from perception positive to one meter finger count. The reasons for the delay of surgery were asked. According to the answers, five groups were formed numbered from one to five. The proportion of the number of patients in each group to the total number of patients was obtained. The groups of patients were as follows: 1. Those who felt he/she had sufficient visual acuity, 2. Those who had undergone surgery in the other eye and so were afraid of a new operation, 3. Those who lacked access to health services, 4. Those who worried about getting worse after the surgery, and 5. Those who had a variety of health problems preventing the operation.
Results: The distribution of formed groups was as follows: 22 (25%) patients in group 1, 18 (21%) patients in group 2, 10 (11.5%) patients in group 3, 29 (33.5%) patients in group 4, and 8 (9%) patients in group 5.
Conclusion: The most common reasons for delayed surgery time are worry about getting worse after the operation and feeling they have sufficient visual acuity. The delayed surgery time can be prevented by explaining the negative results of operation delay to the patients and giving them psychological support to help them overcome their fears.
