Affect of Intraocular Pressure Change on Ocular Pulse Amplitude in Normal and Glaucomatous Eyes

Purpose: To assess the affect of intraocular pressure (IOP) change on ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) in normal and glaucomatous eyes.
Materials and Methods: IOP and OPA of 55 eyes with open angle glaucoma and 51 control eyes were recorded both before and after topical application of apraclonidin or dorzolamide so as to measure baseline and differential OPA in normal and glaucomatous eyes by using dynamic contour tonometers.
Results: In glaucomatous and normal eyes, the mean measurement of IOP was 16.42±2.88 and 15.44±2.66 mmHg (p=0.07), the mean OPA measurement was 2.48±0.79 and 2.32±0.73 mmHg (p=0.48) respectively. After the topical antiglaucomatous drug application, IOP was 14.54±2.27 mmHg with a decrease of 10.70%±10.00 in glaucomatous eyes and 12.59±2.82 mmHg with a decrease of 16.10%±8.80 in normal eyes (p=0.01). With IOP change, OPA became 2.14±0.77 mmHg with a decrease of 13.96%±17.30 in glaucomatous eyes and 1.82±0.70 mmHg with a decrease of 19.90%±22.20 in normal eyes. Normal eyes had insignificantly lower OPA values, which decrease significantly more than in glaucomatous eyes with IOP lowering. (p=0.04)
Conclusion: IOP change has a more effect on OPA in normal than in glaucomatous eyes statistically.
