²AİBU Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı., Bolu, Yrd. Doç. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the management of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) in patients undergoing cataract surgery in the second eye in whom IFIS occured during previous cataract surgery while on tamsulosin treatment.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed in 628 eyes of 564 patients who underwent cataract surgery between June 2008 and January 2011. We evaluated the preventive measures taken in the light of literature and their results in the second eyes of the patients that had severe IFIS in the previous cataract surgery and taking tamsulosin.
Results: We experienced severe IFIS in the second eyes of all patients despite discontinuation of tamsulosin 3-9 months before the cataract surgery and use of ketorolac tromethamine, epinephrine, phenylephrine, high viscosity viscoelastic, iris hooks. In all eyes of the patients, iris lesions and pupil shape irregularities occured due to the iris trauma during the surgery.
Conclusion: In patients who take tamsulosin more than a year the cessation of tamsulosin treatment, taking preventive medical measures and use of iris hooks may not prevent IFIS development. Keywords : Intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, cataract, tamsulosin
