Accommodating Intraocular Lenses

Maltepe Üniversitesi Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul, Yrd. Doç. Dr. The goal of the modern cataract surgery is to achieve fast visual rehabilitation without complications and with low postoperative residual refractive errors.1 Technical progress has decreased the incidence of severe complications with this type of surgery. The introduction of micro incision cataract surgery (MICS) (sub- 2.0 mm incision) may allow the surgeon to achieve better postoperative control of astigmatism and higher-order aberration (HOAs) with minimum induction of both.2 Implantation of accommodating intraocular lenses (IOLs) is an option to treat presbyopia. The IOLs work by using the continued functionality of the ciliary muscle after cataract removal. Accommodating IOLs were designed to avoid the optical side effects of multifocal IOLs. Two main design concepts exist. First, axial shift concepts rely on anterior axial movement of one or two optics creating accommodative ability.3-4 Second, curvature change designs are designed to provide significant amplitudes of accommodation with little physical displacement.5 Keywords : Intraocular Lens, cataract
