Effect of Nd:Yag Laser Posterior Capsulotomy on Visual Acuity, Intraocular Pressure, and Macular Thickness

Purpose: To review the effect of Neodymium: yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy on visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) and central macular thickness.
Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 38 eyes of 38 patients who underwent Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy from January 2009 to April 2009. The mean age of patients was 60,8±18,3 years. Pre-laser central macular thickness, IOP, and BCVA values were compared with post-laser measurements at 1 week, 1 and 3 months.
Results: While the mean central macular thickness was 206.8±27.6 μ before laser, the post-laser values at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months were 205.3±29.8 μ, 209.8±28.7 μ, and 210.2±27.2 μ, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in mean central macular thickness before laser capsulotomy and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after laser (p>0.05). The mean baseline IOP was 16.8±4,0 mmhg. The mean IOP following laser treatment was 17±3.1 mmhg, 16.9±4.2 mmhg, 17.1±2.1 mmhg at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months, respectively.
Conclusion: Nd: YAG Laser capsulotomy using a low energy level for the treatment of posterior capsular opacification is a safe and effective procedure which increase BCVA without a significant increasing macular thickness and elevation of IOP.
