Purpose: To investigate the correlation of diurnal variation and fluctuation of intraocular pressure (IOP) with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum lipid levels in normal subjects.
Materials and Methods: This study is a retrospective randomized clinical trial involving one eye of 56 normal subjects. The subjects were included to this study according to the the principles of Helsinki Declaration and the criteria of ethic council of the Middle East Technical University (METU). IOP measurements were recorded by using Goldmann applanation tonometer at 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00 and 22:00 hours for 5 days. Fasting serum levels of HbA1c, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, triglycerid were analyzed. One sample t-test, pearson's test and ANOVA analysis were used in the SPSS 15.0 programme. p value <=0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
Results: Statistically significant linear correlation was only found between diurnal variation and fluctuation of IOP and HbA1c (p<0.05). The direction of the correlation was positive and it can be expressed with regression line as Diurnal variation of IOP =-2.124+0.992 HbA1c. The direction of the linear correlation between fluctuation of IOP and HbA1c was positive and it can be expressed with regression line as ln( fluctuation of IOP) =0.569+0.257 HbA1c (In=natural logarithmic function).
Conclusion: HbA1c was considered as a significant parameter affecting diurnal variation and fluctuation of IOP in normal subjects.
