Purpose: To compare the safety and efficacy of the foldable (Artisan/Veriyse) and nonfoldable (Artiflex) iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (IF-PIOL) for the correction of high myopia
Materials and Methods: Twenty seven eyes of 17 patients with miyopia from -6 D to -20.5 D were reviewed retrospectively. A foldable or nonfoldable IF-PIOL were implanted to all of the patients. Refractive outcomes were compared between two lens groups at one year after the operation.
Results: In this study, 12 eyes underwent foldable IF-PIOL and 15 eyes underwent nonfoldable IF-PIOL implantation. At one year after the operation, 92% of foldable treated eyes and 53% of nonfoldable treated eyes were within ±1D of the intended emmetropia (p=0.04). The mean preoperative and postoperative first year best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.25±0.26 and 0.13±0.21for foldable treated eyes and 0.41±0.31ve 0.19±0.11 for nonfoldable treated eyes (p>0.05).
Conclusion: While the percent of eyes within the intended spheric equivalent was statistically higher for foldable lens to correct high myopia, postoperative final BCVA, central endothelial cell loss, cylinder power, and intraocular pressure were not statistically significant between foldable and nonfoldable lenses
