Purpose: To evaluate the results of Cionni modified capsular tension ring (MCTR) and intraocular lens implantation after phacoemulsification in patients with congenitally subluxated lens.
Materials and Methods: Thirteen eyes of 7 patients with conjenital loss of zonular support had phacoemulsification with in-the-bag implantation of Cionni MCTR and foldable intraocular lens. MCTRs were sutured to sclera using 10.0 polipropilen monoflaman suture (PC-9) from their eyelets without violating the integrity of capsular bag. Preoperative and postoperative best corrected visual acuity, intraoperative performance, IOL centration and complications were studied.
Results: The mean patient age was 10.7±3.6 years (range 7 to 18 years) Mean follow-up was16.8±6.8 months (range 9 to 32 months). The mean BCVA at the final follow-up (0.60±0.11), (range 0.4-0.8) was significantly better than preoperatively (0.13±0.06), (range0.05-0.3). Postoperative mean spherical equivalance was +0.57 D (range -1.0 D to +2.50 D), postoperative mean astigmatism was 1.25 D (range 0.5D to 2.5D). Centration of IOL was achieved in all cases intraoperatively. No eye required secondary intervention for IOL decentration. YAG capsulotomy was performed in four eyes (30%) for posterior capsular opacification during follow-up period.
Conclusion: Implantation of Cionni MCTR in patients with conjenitally subluxated lens is a safe pocedure and resulted in centration of capsular bag and IOL.
