Purpose: To evaluate the effect of small incision cataract surgery on corneal irregular astigmatism with Fourier analysis of corneal topography data.
Materials and Methods: Thirty-two eyes of 22 patients with cataract were included in the study. Cataract surgery was performed through a 3.5 mm superior corneal incision and a foldable intraocular lens was implanted in all eyes. Corneal topographic examinations and Fourier analysis of the topographic data were performed preoperatively and at least 2 months after the surgery. Pre- and postoperative Fourier analysis components, i.e. spherical power, regular astigmatism, asymmetry, and higher order irregularity values, were compared using a paired samples t-test.
Results: Corneal spherical power and asymmetry were not significantly changed in the central 3 mm or 6 mm zone (p<0.05). Postoperative regular astigmatism and higher order irregularity in the 3 mm zone were not different from preoperative values, whereas regular astigmatism and higher order irregularity in the 6 mm zone were significantly increased postoperatively.
Conclusion: Both the regular astigmatism and higher order irregularity components of Fourier analysis in the 6 mm zone increased significantly after cataract surgery through a 3.5 mm superior corneal incision.
