Purpose: To compare and evaluate the clinical results of silicone (FP-7) and polypropylene (S-2) Ahmed glaucoma valves (AGV) in neovascular glaucoma cases.
Materials and Methods: 26 eyes of 21 patients with neovascular glaucoma were included into study. In 14 eyes polypropylene (model S-2) (group 1) and in 12 eyes silicone (model FP-7) AGV were implanted. All cases were performed under local anesthesia. After fornix-based conjunctival flap was created the valve was positioned 10-12 mm posterior to the limbus in the superotemporal quadrant.
Results: The patients were followed up one year. The mean age was 65.42±12.81 years (28-83 years) in group 1 and 57.58±17.21 years (25-77 years) in group 2 (p=0.216). Preoperative mean intraocular pressures (IOP) under medication were 45.46±14.60 mmHg (29-65 mmHg) and 48±8.27 mmHg (37-60 mmHg), respectively group 1 and group 2 (p=0.429). Preoperative visual acuities were between light perception (+) and 1/10 in both groups.Postoperative mean IOP at the end of one year were 18.07±3.81 mmHg and 17.58±4.44 mmHg, respectively group 1 and group 2 (p=0.938). After the operation the number of glaucoma drugs were statistically decreased in both groups (respectively p=0.007 and p=0.01). Hypotony and shallow anterior chamber were observed in 6 eyes (42.8%) in group 1 and 5 eyes (41.6%) in group 2. In group 1 two choroidal detachments and two hyphemas and in group 2 two choroidal detachments and one hyphema were observed. Regarding complications and visual acuities there were no statistically significant difference (p=1.00). In first year surgical success 64.2% in group 1 and 66.6% in group 2 (p=1.00).
Conclusion: In neovascular glaucoma cases it was observed that there was no difference regarding IOP reduction and complications between either AGV.
