Purpose: To evaluate the central and peripheral corneal volume changes after uneventful phacoemulsification.
Materials and Methods: Forty-two eyes of 34 (26 male and 8 female) patients who, underwent uneventful phacoemulsification, were examinedenrolled in this study. Corneal volumes of 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm corneal volumes were measured using Scheimflug imaging (Pentacam, Oculus, Inc.) preoperatively and postoperatively at after 1st, 3rd, and 6th months. The paired t-test was used to compare preoperative and 1, 3, and 6 months’ postoperative corneal volume measurements.
Results: Mean corneal volumes in 3 mm, preoperatively, and postoperatively at 1st, 3rd, and 6th months postoperatively were 3.84±0.23 mm3, 3.85±0.26 mm3, 3.83±0.25 mm3, and 3.89±0.25 mm3, respectively. Mean corneal volumes measurements in 5 mm preoperatively and postoperatively at 1st, 3rd, and 6th months postoperatively were 11.160± 0.67 mm3, 11.255±0.75 mm3, 11.155±0.75 mm3, and 11.286±0.73 mm3, respectively. Mean corneal volume measurements in 7 mm, preoperatively and postoperatively at 1st, 3rd, and 6th months postoperatively were 23.66±1.52 mm3, 23.89±1.64 mm3, 23.74±1.67 mm3, and 23.79±1.58 mm3, respectively. The mean 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm central corneal volumes measurements did not reveal show any significant change preoperatively and or at postoperative 1, 3, and 6 months (p>0.05).
Conclusion: A positive relationship between endothelial damage and corneal volume was known. So Therefore, corneal volume measurements in 3, 5, and 7 mm taken obtained with Pentacam can be useful to show corneal endothelial changes after phacoemulsification surgery.
